Cabergoline (brand names Dostinex, Caberlin, and Cabaser) is a long-acting dopamine receptor agonist derived from ergot, with high affinity for D2 receptors. It is commonly used in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia and prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors (prolactinomas), where it helps reduce prolactin secretion from pituitary lactotroph cells.
Compared to older agents such as bromocriptine, cabergoline is generally preferred due to improved tolerability and a more convenient dosing schedule. It may also be used in select clinical cases where modulation of prolactin levels is required under medical supervision.
