Finasteride (brand names Proscar and Propecia) is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss. It works by reducing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone involved in prostate enlargement and hair follicle miniaturization.
In BPH, finasteride helps improve urinary symptoms and may reduce the risk of urinary retention and the need for surgical intervention. In male pattern hair loss, it is used to slow hair thinning and promote regrowth in affected areas of the scalp.
Finasteride is not indicated for use in women or children and should only be used under medical supervision.
