Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that blocks estrogen activity in breast tissue while acting like estrogen in some other tissues, such as the endometrium.
It is commonly used in hormone receptor–positive breast cancer treatment and sometimes in fertility medicine. Because it can block estrogen effects in breast tissue, it is also used to help manage or reduce gynecomastia in certain clinical situations.
